Joana Vasconcelos @ Palace of Versailles

This year contemporary art is represented at Versailles by Joana Vasconcelos. After the American Jeff Koons, the Japanese Takashi Murakami, and the Frenchmen Xavier Veilhan and Bernar Venet, she is the first woman, as well as the youngest artist, to tackle the unsurpassed historical benchmark that is the Château of Versailles.

The approach of the Portuguese artist Vasconcelos, born in Paris in 1971, consists of the reappropriation of everyday objects which she transforms using inventive and unexpected techniques. These displacements produce hybrid objects made with azulejos (glazed ceramic tiles) and crochet work (a French word appropriated and amplified by the work of Portuguese women): they are stitched together, welded, gilded, etc. In a word, they undergo a metamorphosis.

As Vasconcelos puts it, “The Palace of Versailles is the place of art par excellence, where artists have always felt at home, displaying their work in it not as an exhibition space but as a setting totally imbued with art. It is a full, complete and rich place where it seems that nothing can be added. It is the ideal setting for celebrating audacity, experimentation and freedom, where creative talent is appreciated like in no other place.”

M50 - Moganshan Lu nº50, Shanghai

Nova York tem o Meatpacking District. Londres, o Hoxton. Xangai tem o Moganshan Lu (Lu, Rua em mandarim). Embora seja conhecido como Rua, este parque industrial repleto de armazéns junto ao rio Suzhou, foram no passado uma boa alternativa para as altas rendas pagas pelos artistas em ambientes pequenos, noutros bairros da cidade. Esta região, que desde 1930 abrigava somente antigos depósitos e fábricas, começou a tornar-se mais artística em 2000 quando um artista oriundo de Xangai, Xue Song, reformou um dos espaços , mudando-se para lá.

Também conhecida por M50 (Moganshan nº50), conheceu então uma enorme transformação. Aqui começou a grande revolução na expressão artística de Xangai – agora em alta - com a abertura de estúdios de grandes nomes da arte mundial.

Zhou Tiehai, Gu Wenda e Wang Xingwei, são alguns desses nomes orientais, entre tantos outros ocidentais.

Começava a peregrinação para jovens artistas, “art dealers” e apreciadores de Arte Contemporânea, Graffiti e obviamente Pop Art chinesa.

Actualmente, para além de lojas para iniciantes nas artes, boutiques de design locais, móveis art deco e cafés, existem galerias de arte contemporânea como a Shine Art Space, a M97 e a muy famosa  ShanghART.
